The procurement review process of the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, Peking University has long been renowned for its professional rigor. This time, the HMS 6500 successfully won the bid by virtue of its core technological advantages, including “high reproducibility with thousands of consecutive injections” and “accurate quantification of ultra-low concentrations in complex matrices”. Behind these performance highlights stands the achievement of BIIC-Tech’s continuous R&D investment and near-stringent quality control in the mass spectrometry field over the years.

As a state-owned enterprise under the Beijing Municipal Government, BIIC-Tech has taken “domestic substitution for imports” as its core strategy since its establishment, and focuses on the R&D and manufacturing of high-end scientific instruments such as mass spectrometers, adhering to the tenet of “protecting life and health with technology”. The company has built a three-tier talent echelon of “Chief Engineer + Technical Leader + Core Professional”, and established a professional technical team of hundreds of people. It has accumulated nearly 300 valid patents, and its 14 wholly-owned subsidiaries have formed a complete industrial layout covering more than 20 product lines including chromatography, spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. BIIC-Tech Huazhi is precisely its core platform for specialized and in-depth cultivation in the mass spectrometry field.

“Breakthroughs in high-end instruments are never achieved overnight; they require long-term technological accumulation and repeated verification,” stated Qin Haibo, Chairman of BIIC-Tech, at the Zhongguancun Forum earlier. This statement vividly embodies the company’s R&D philosophy. To overcome the core technologies of mass spectrometry, BIIC-Tech has not only established a municipal-level qualified technology center, but also undertaken the development project of “Ion Mobility-Quadrupole-High Resolution Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer” launched by the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission and Zhongguancun Administrative Committee in 2024, aiming to fill domestic gaps by benchmarking against internationally leading technologies.

Company leaders and Academician Zhang Yukui visited the exhibition hall of the Zhongguancun Forum and took a group photo in front of the prototype of the Ion Mobility-Quadrupole-High Resolution Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer.

This long-term investment and accumulation have ultimately transformed into the core competitive strength of the HMS 6500: an Electrospray Ionization (ESI) source with an ultra-high heating temperature of 750℃, which can meet the special needs of clinical testing for steroid hormones, anti-tumor drugs, etc.; an extremely wide mass range of over 2100 amu, enabling accurate detection of substances with high mass-to-charge ratios (m/z) such as Cyclosporin A (m/z 1202.8); a high scanning speed of over 30,000 amu/s, which can complete multi-channel monitoring in a single injection and significantly improve research efficiency. More notably, the instrument can achieve long-term stable operation in the analysis and detection of complex matrix samples, such as high-fat foods, traditional Chinese medicines with high tannin content, and environmental samples interfered by humic acid. This feature perfectly aligns with the practical application needs of top research institutions and testing organizations for complex and variable sample matrices.

A stringent quality control system serves as another guarantee for BIIC-Tech’s products to gain a foothold in the scientific instrument market. From the processing of core components to the assembly of the entire machine, the HMS 6500 implements enterprise standards that are higher than national standards. The ion source components alone undergo a 500-hour continuous high-temperature operation test, and the automatic calibration error of the quadrupole mass analyzer is controlled within 0.1 amu. This extreme pursuit of details has enabled the instrument to not only pass the strict review of Peking University’s procurement, but also jointly win the bid with the atomic absorption spectrometer of its sister company Beifen Ruili in the recent procurement of Tianjin Medical College, securing a 5.733 million yuan biomedical testing platform project.

With the HMS 6500 winning bids for the projects of Peking University and Tianjin Medical College successively, industry experts point out that the selection of domestically developed instruments by research institutions, especially top universities, not only reflects recognition of product performance, but also will foster a virtuous cycle of “scientific research application – technological iteration – industrial upgrading”, and accelerate the development of China’s high-end scientific instrument industry.

Taking this bid-winning opportunity, BIIC-Tech will further increase its technological layout in fields such as AI + instrumentation and new sensors, deepen cooperation with universities and research institutes, and continuously break through core technologies through the “industry-university-research-application” integration model. As more and more domestically developed high-end instruments like the HMS 6500 move to the forefront of scientific research applications, China’s scientific instrument industry is accelerating its progress from “following” to “keeping pace” and “leading”.

When the three-in-one multi-functional autosampler from BIIC-Tech Huazhi works with the GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer) from Beifen Ruili, the multi-functional autosampler significantly enhances the automation and intelligence level of GC-MS analysis.
